Sitecore Community Group Chat

Challenge:

This idea was popping in to my mind since last few months. But somehow was not getting time to act on it.

Basically , While going through http://www.dotnetconf.net/ I came across https://jabbr.net [jabbr.net has become a popular gathering place for members of the ASP.NET community.] setup they have done for allowing people across same technology interest to talk –Was thinking that we should also have it for Sitecore — http://about.jabbr.net/ [If you are new to Jabbr then this is for you : JabbR is a chat application built with ASP.NET using SignalR – If you are new to SignalIR then  this is for you : ASP.NET SignalR is a new library for ASP.NET developers that makes developing real-time web functionality easy. SignalR allows bi-directional communication between server and client. Servers can now push content to connected clients instantly as it becomes available. SignalR supports Web Sockets, and falls back to other compatible techniques for older browsers. SignalR includes APIs for connection management (for instance, connect and disconnect events), grouping connections, and authorization.]

I shared this idea with one of Sitecore Champ, But we haven’t got a chance to talk more on this idea. Then suddenly I came across this link : http://blog.appharbor.com/2012/4/30/run-your-own-group-chat-with-appharbor-and-jabbr

Basically, It allows you to host Jabbr on AppHarbor [“AppHarbor is a fully hosted .NET Platform as a Service. AppHarbor can deploy and scale any standard .NET application to the cloud”] and that too is FREE!

Solution:

The article seems straight forward [But as we know, Life is not as easy as it seems to be] It took roughly 3-4 hours to configure it. And the great news is it is working! (It has all the features, Which HipChat and other chat providers provide. E.g. Embed Content, Popup notification etc.)

Currently have create one room only : Sitecore-Live-Forum — With an intention to make question answering faster and easier! If someone has question and someone is available to answer. They can discuss instantly! If you would like to add room, please do let me know. Few Rooms I can think of:

  1. Sitecore MVC
  2. Sitecore SPEAK
  3. Sitecore Search
  4. Sitecore MVP

Few things:

  1. This rooms are public. I’m sure you will. But just wanted to make sure, please avoid sharing personal information. Use words cautiously!
  2. Current FREE Account is using Yocto version of SQL Server. Which means it has 20 MB Storage on a Shared SQL Server
  3. Currently we don’t run any backup on this application. So, your messages might disappear.

Great idea. But lot of limitations right? I agree. But you can take this initiative just as test run. If we get better response. Community/Sitecore should go ahead and think on setting up one dedicated instance with high configuration for this.

See you there!
